Is there anything better than doing a little exploring during the beautiful summer months? It’s the perfect time to get to know an area, especially if it’s one that you haven’t taken time to discover before. This month, we’re heading back to Hamilton and highlighting an area that’s perfect for anyone who loves supporting local businesses and having everything they need (almost!) at their front door - Westdale.
Why is this area of Hamilton such a hidden gem? Well, a quick walk through the neighbourhood will make you feel like you belong here. A picturesque community full of charming places to live, it is home to families, long-time locals and young, established couples as well as students in the southern area near McMaster University. Centred around the lively area of Westdale Village, this is a community you don’t want to miss out on.
There’s Never Been a Better Time to Support Local
Take a stroll through the bustling village and surrounding area and you’ll find a lovely selection of favourite new places to grab a bite. Feast on Mediterranean fare at Basilique, enjoy some of Hamilton’s best sushi from Chef Martin’s Sushi House or grab a beefy (or vegetarian-friendly) burger at Delirious Burger Co. Eat like a local at one of the neighbourhood’s most popular spots, like Paisley Coffeehouse and Eatery, The Bean Bar, or The Snooty Fox. If something hot and comforting is more your speed, lunch at The Burnt Tongue will be right up your alley.
And don’t forget to check out one of Westdale’s newest, Chung Chun Rice Dogs. While this popular new addition to the neighbourhood often has a lineup out the door, it’s worth the wait to try their delicious Korean-style hotdogs.
Have a bit of a sweet tooth? You’re in luck. Westdale is home to a few great spots that will leave your sweet side feeling satisfied. Start with a visit to Walker’s Chocolates, a favourite of those living in the Hamilton/Burlington area since the first started making candy in 1983. Enjoy one of their signature chocolates, the Mint Meltaway, and see why people have fallen in love with their confections for almost 40 years. If you’re looking for goodies of the baked variety, there are a couple of delicious destinations to add to your list: Weil’s of Westdale Bakery, which has been serving up tasty treats since 1903, and Cupcakes of Westdale Village, a spot that focuses making mouth-watering cupcakes in classic and specialty flavours.
On the hunt for the perfect gift for someone special? Take a walk through Westdale and you’ll be met with several specialty shops that might fit the bill. Browse the shelves at Take Note Stationery Boutique for that perfect present, or find something for a foodie friend at Tea With You or The Casual Gourmet. Take a stroll over to Waypoint Games (and stay for a coffee!), King W. Books, Four Points Puzzles, and Mixed Media Art for help finding something fantastic. If you’re looking for the perfect accessory or piece of clothing, head on over to Modella Ladieswear and METTAMADE. Of course, you can never go wrong with flowers from Westdale Florist!
Once you’ve made the move here, one of the best places to shop during the warmer months is the Westdale Village Market, offering farm-fresh goods every Tuesday from 4-7 PM beside The Casual Gourmet.
Take a little time out for yourself and enjoy some TLC from one of the neighbourhood’s amazing personal care spots. If you’re in desperate need of a haircut after lockdown, you’ll find yourself in good hands at Sokie & Co., West Side Hair Co., and the Westdale Barber Shop. After you’ve gotten your hair back under control, take care of everything from the hairline down at Bare Wax Bar & Relax Beauty Co, and get moving with help from the experts at Westdale Pilates and Allure Fitness.
A staple in the neighbourhood since 1935, The Westdale is all about creating magic within the community. This recently restored theatre is an independent cultural space that offers screenings for art indie films along with Hamilton Originals, an online programming project that was created to allow local musicians to play and share their stories during the pandemic. The Westdale also provides a space for public performances exhibitions, acting as a cultural hub for its neighbours.
Enjoy the Outdoors

Churchill Park is one spot that you’ll make great use of; it gives you a chance to relax and escape the noise of the city, with lots of space and fun activities to enjoy like soccer, lawn bowling, and softball during the summer months, and skating during the winter.
