Know Your Community: Kirkendall North, Hamilton
When it comes to finding the perfect area to call home, what is most important to you? Each month, we’re going to be sharing a look into the different neighbourhoods that make up Hamilton and our surrounding cities to give you a glimpse of what you’ll find when you explore them or make them your home. It feels fitting to start with Kirkendall North, the area that we’re proud to call our home base, and share what makes this neighbourhood so special.
Whether you’re relaxing outside at a park, grabbing treats from one of the areas beloved bakeries or picking up something special from the shops on Locke and Dundurn, Kirkendall North has everything you need right at your front door. This neighbourhood is vibrant and thriving, with an incredibly supportive community and entrepreneurial spirit that just keeps growing.
Get Your Shop On
When it comes to shopping local, you'll have to try pretty hard to find a better destination than Kirkendall North. Both Locke and Dundurn Streets have become well-known for their variety of incredible shopping options. From gift boutiques to specialty grocers, you don't have to go far to find exactly what you need. Find the perfect gift at shops like Pure Home Couture or Nest, learn something new at Epic Books or grab something special for the little one at Citizen Kid - the options are endless!
Dundurn Market has become a staple in the neighbourhood, providing fresh local produce, baked goods & ready-made meals that are all ethically-sourced and delicious. Justin Abbiss, co-founder of Dundurn Market, loves being a part of this area that embraces community so strongly: "If you walk down the street, everyone knows everyone, is friendly, waves and truly it feels like they are looking out for each other. When we first opened the shop, we had customers bringing us plants, welcoming gifts and greeting cards."

While they've had to make some adjustments over the past few months during the pandemic, with enhanced measures to ensure a safe shopping environment, the community has kept them busy and their delivery service (available 5 days a week) has been invaluable. As an added bonus, their socially distanced patio is up and running so you can enjoy a cold local beer on tap after you shop!
Grab Some Grub
You can't get to know Kirkendall North without enjoying some delicious food. The neighbourhood is a mecca for good grub, with many talented chefs and restaurateurs setting up shop in it over the last few years to keep our bellies full and satisfied. Whether you're craving a fantastic donut from Donut Monster or sweet treat from Cake & Loaf, ready to sit down for an unforgettable meal at Brux House or grabbing a handcrafted latte to go from Democracy*, you know that you're in good hands.

Ronn Mattai, owner of Mattson & Co. on Locke Street, enjoys being a part of this area because of the "true sense of community" and "genuine love between neighbours". Over the last few months, they've made a few changes to their space to adapt to the pandemic; namely, the transformation of their bar area into the Mattson To Go Cafe, where guests can pick up a fresh espresso beverage, tasty pastry and other fresh meals on the go. Now that patio season is here, they also have a great outdoor space to enjoy a glass of VQA wine or Nickelbrook beer and some of their delicious dishes, like their Crispy Dry Ribs served with house aioli, berry molasses gastrique and chilli.
Thinking of stopping by? Make sure you mention this post and you'll enjoy a complimentary biscotti with the purchase of a latte or cappuccino!
Looking forward to getting some fresh air? The Kirkendall North neighbourhood is home to some beautiful green spaces for the community to enjoy. Pack a picnic and spend the afternoon outside at Jackson Park or bring the pups and let them run around at Hill Street Park, one of the city's fenced dog parks.
