Know Your Community: Aldershot
This month, we want to bring things back to Burlington to focus on an area that has seen immense growth and changes over the past few years, due to its accessible location and family-friendly neighbourhoods. Aldershot, an area that covers the western side of Burlington between North Shore Blvd and the space just north of the 403, is not to be overlooked and is a great destination for families looking to enjoy a suburban lifestyle in a safe and friendly community.

And even if you did not realize it, you have probably been to Aldershot before. Why is that? Well, it’s home to one of Burlington’s busiest spots – Ikea. While you have most likely roamed the aisles of the store while shopping for furniture and accessories for your home, you may not have had a chance to explore the surrounding area. If not, you’re missing out and we’re about to show you why!
Find a Place to Call Home
While visiting Aldershot, you’ll notice that you have a variety of different housing options available to suit your family’s needs. Aldershot Central and West are great places to start if you’re a young professional interested in condo living or a family looking for something that fits just right in a central neighbourhood, with easy access to amenities like the Aldershot Library and Arena. If you’re looking for a bit more space and room to grow, especially with a larger family, Aldershot South is likely to be more your speed. Of course, more rural living is still possible when you take a look at the area of Aldershot East, giving you lots of options when it comes to finding the perfect place to put down your roots.
Stop and Smell the Roses

After settling into the area, you’ll quickly discover amazing spots that local residents and visitors like to frequent. One of the brightest places you will find yourself making regular visits to is the Royal Botanical Gardens, Canada’s largest botanical garden. Located on the western side of Aldershot, the RBG is made up of four gardens located within 1,100 hectares of nature reserve. You will want to plan your visits at different points of the year so that you can enjoy their incredible seasonal blooms and trails as they change. Make sure you take in some of their incredible events like RBG After Dark, Rock the Night Away and their delicious jazz brunches.
Time to Explore
In addition to the Royal Botanical Gardens, you will find many other reasons to get outside and explore. You will not want to miss the view from one of Aldershot’s most-loved spots, LaSalle Park. Located on North Shore Blvd, this beautiful park along the water offers incredible views of Lake Ontario and the surrounding area. With 57 acres to explore, your family will enjoy access to sports fields, a playground, a wading pool and splash pad and picnic space. If you’re into boating, you’ll also love having access to the LaSalle Park Marina.
In addition to LaSalle, you’ll also enjoy getting outside and enjoying nature during visits to spots like Bayview Park (especially if you have pups – they’ll love running around the leash-free dog park area), Aldershot Park, Kiwanis Park (located conveniently beside Aldershot Arena), and Hidden Valley Park, which offers great hiking trails.

If you’re looking to work on your game, a membership at the Burlington Golf and Country Club is something you’ll want to look into. Opened in 1923, the course offers 18 holes of play by the lake with a beautiful clubhouse to relax in and discuss your game afterwards. In addition to golf, the BGCC also offers curling, with instructional programs available for those who want to get started.
Delight Your Taste Buds
Aldershot is home to some dining spots, both fine and casual, that have become staples for Burlington residents over the years. If you’re looking for a spot for a romantic date night, the Lord Nelson Steak House will quickly become a favourite. Known for their aged steaks and fresh seafood, the restaurant has been serving up delicious fare in an elegant setting since 1974. If you’re looking for food with more of a European flair, take a trip down the street for dinner at West Plains Bistro and enjoy one of their prix-fixe menus in their lovely, intimate dining room or cozy patio during the summer.
Ready for something more casual? Breakfast lovers will enjoy a stop at one of Burlington’s staples, Russell Williams Family Restaurant. This mom-and-pop spot has been serving up comfort classics and stacks of pancakes for over 75 years; make sure you get there early as they usually have a line up on weekends!
Other local favourites that are worth a visit (or many more!) include Easterbrook’s and its famous foot-long hot dogs, Turtledoves Bakery, which serves up mouth-watering gluten-free treats, Sakis Greek Restaurant, MoMo Sushi, and Ye Olde Squire.

The area takes pride in their community and you’ll feel right at home in no time. Local residents love to promote all of their local offerings and supporting small businesses is easy with so many great shops, salons spas and services to enjoy. The Aldershot Village BIA is a great place to start when it comes to getting your bearings and they put on many great events throughout the year to strengthen the community’s spirit, including Alderfest, an annual festival that celebrates the area which hopes to return in September 2021.
Note: Check in on each location’s current operating hours and restrictions as they may be running differently due to regional pandemic protocols.
